Samsung 990 EVO - M.2 PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD - 1TB

The Samsung 990 EVO occupies an unusual spot in Samsung's lineup. It uses a PCIe Gen5 x2 / Gen4 x4 dual-mode interface, meaning it connects via two Gen5 lanes or four Gen4 lanes depending on the host platform. Either way, effective bandwidth is similar. Samsung's in-house controller, V-NAND TLC, and Host Memory Buffer (no dedicated DRAM) round out the specs.

The Dual-Mode Interface

Gen5 x2 and Gen4 x4 deliver roughly the same peak bandwidth (about 8 GT/s per direction). The 990 EVO maxes out at 5,000/4,200 MB/s sequential read/write regardless of which mode the host selects. This is a mid-range Gen4 speed tier, not a Gen5 performance play. The Gen5 lanes are about future-proofing and power efficiency, not raw speed.

DRAMless

The 990 EVO uses HMB instead of dedicated DRAM. Random I/O at low queue depth (QD1) is 20K/90K IOPS read/write, which is modest. At QD32, it reaches 680-700K/800K IOPS. For consumer workloads this is fine. For anything resembling a sustained mixed workload, the DRAM-equipped 990 Pro is a different class.

Endurance

600 TBW (1TB), 1,200 TBW (2TB). Five-year warranty. Power consumption is lower than the 990 Pro, making it a reasonable laptop option.

Best for: Laptops where power efficiency matters more than peak performance. Budget desktop builds that want Samsung reliability without paying 990 Pro prices. Available in 1TB and 2TB only.

Avoid if: You need strong random I/O or sustained write performance. The 990 EVO Plus is faster at the same price point, and the 990 Pro (with DRAM) is a tier above both.
