The Samsung 990 EVO Plus is a significant upgrade over the 990 EVO, built on Samsung's newer V8 (8th-generation V-NAND) TLC. It shares the same PCIe Gen5 x2 / Gen4 x4 dual-mode interface as the 990 EVO but delivers substantially more throughput: 7,150/6,300 MB/s sequential read/write across all capacities. That puts it within striking distance of the DRAM-equipped 990 Pro.

Closing the Gap

The 990 EVO Plus is DRAMless (HMB), yet its sequential speeds nearly match the 990 Pro (7,450/6,900 MB/s). Samsung's V8 NAND and controller optimizations are doing the heavy lifting. Random I/O at QD32 scales from 850K/1,350K IOPS (1TB) to 1,050K/1,400K IOPS (4TB). These are strong numbers for an HMB drive. The gap versus the 990 Pro shows up primarily under sustained random I/O at high queue depths, where dedicated DRAM still wins.

Power Efficiency

Active power draw is 4.3-5.5W read and 4.2-4.8W write depending on capacity. The V8 NAND runs more efficiently than earlier generations, making this a good laptop option. The 990 Pro draws more power under load.

Avoid if: You need maximum sustained random I/O under heavy mixed workloads. The 990 Pro's dedicated DRAM cache still matters for that use case.
