The 7mm height fits thin laptops and is compatible with 9.5mm bays.

Why 7,200 RPM in a Laptop Drive Matters

Most 2.5-inch drives spin at 5,400 RPM. The Black Mobile's 7,200 RPM spindle cuts rotational latency nearly in half, which translates to noticeably faster application load times, game installs, and large file copies compared to a standard WD Blue Mobile. The trade-off is slightly higher power draw (2W read/write vs 1.5W on the Blue) and a bit more noise under seek loads.

Both current models use SMR recording. Older 500GB variants (WD5000LPLX) used CMR with 32MB cache, but those are discontinued.

Black Mobile vs. Blue Mobile

The Black Mobile's 7,200 RPM spindle gives it a meaningful throughput advantage over the 5,400 RPM Blue Mobile, especially for random I/O. The Black also carries a 5-year warranty versus the Blue's 2-year, reflecting the more robust build. Both top out at 1TB, so if capacity is the priority, consider a 2TB Blue Mobile or an SSD.

When an SSD Makes More Sense

At these capacities (500GB-1TB), a SATA or NVMe SSD will outperform the Black Mobile in every metric. The Black Mobile's niche is cost-per-gigabyte for secondary storage in laptops with a second drive bay, or legacy systems that need a mechanical replacement.

Best for: Secondary storage in dual-drive laptops, gaming handhelds with 2.5-inch bays, or small form factor builds where you need fast mechanical storage.

Avoid if: You only have one drive bay (get an SSD instead) or need more than 1TB of capacity.
