About WD Red Plus - 3.5" NAS HDD
The WD Red Plus is Western Digital's mid-range NAS drive, positioned between the entry-level WD Red and the enterprise-grade Red Pro. All Red Plus models use CMR recording and are rated for a 180TB/year workload, making them appropriate for always-on NAS systems with up to eight bays.
NAS-Specific Features
Western Digital includes NASware 3.0 firmware across the lineup, which provides RAID-optimized error recovery (TLER). This prevents RAID controllers from dropping a drive during extended error correction, a common failure mode with desktop drives in multi-disk arrays. Western Digital also tests the Red Plus line against a wide range of NAS enclosures from Synology, QNAP, and other vendors to verify compatibility.
The drives use a dual-plane balance control system designed to reduce vibration in multi-drive enclosures. This matters more than it sounds: unbalanced drives in a packed NAS chassis create resonance that degrades both performance and lifespan over time.
Performance by Capacity
Specs are not uniform across the lineup. Higher-capacity models run faster and include more cache.
| Capacity | RPM | Cache | Seq. Throughput |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2TB | 5,400 | 64MB | ~180 MB/s |
| 3TB - 6TB | 5,400 | 256MB | ~180 MB/s |
| 8TB | 5,640 | 256MB | ~210 MB/s |
| 10TB | 7,200 | 256MB | ~215 MB/s |
| 12TB - 14TB | 7,200 | 512MB | ~215 MB/s |
The 10TB and above models deliver performance close to the Red Pro at a lower price, which makes them the strongest value in the lineup.
Red Plus vs. Red Pro
The Red Pro adds rotational vibration sensors, a 300TB/year workload rating, support for up to 24 bays, and a five-year warranty (compared to three years on the Red Plus). Those features justify the premium in rack-mounted servers with heavy concurrent access across many drives. For home NAS builds running TrueNAS, Unraid, or Synology DSM in a 1-8 bay enclosure, the Red Plus is sufficient.
The standard WD Red (non-Plus) should be avoided for ZFS or traditional RAID, as smaller capacities use SMR recording.
