Seagate IronWolf - 3.5" NAS HDD - 12TB SATA
About Seagate IronWolf - 3.5" NAS HDD
The Seagate IronWolf is Seagate's consumer NAS drive, designed for 1 to 8-bay NAS systems. All capacities use CMR recording, and every model includes rotational vibration (RV) sensors and error recovery control (ERC), making them safe for RAID and ZFS without special configuration.
Performance by Capacity
The lineup splits into two tiers based on spindle speed. Lower capacities run quieter at 5,400 RPM, while the 8TB and above models move to 7,200 RPM for higher throughput.
| Capacity | RPM | Cache | Seq. Throughput |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1TB - 6TB | 5,400 | 256MB | ~180-202 MB/s |
| 8TB - 18TB | 7,200 | 256MB | ~210 MB/s |
All models share a 180TB/year workload rating and 1 million hours MTBF. Seagate includes three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services with every IronWolf drive.
NAS and RAID Compatibility
CMR recording and ERC support mean these work without issue in ZFS pools (TrueNAS, Proxmox), Synology SHR, and traditional RAID arrays. No timeout tuning is needed. The built-in RV sensors help maintain performance when multiple drives share a chassis, and IronWolf Health Management (IHM) surfaces drive health data through compatible Synology, QNAP, and ASUSTOR NAS software.
IronWolf vs. IronWolf Pro
The Pro adds a 300TB/year workload rating, 1.2 million hours MTBF, support for up to 24 bays, and a five-year warranty. Those differences matter in rack-mounted deployments with heavy concurrent access. For a home NAS under eight bays, the standard IronWolf is sufficient and significantly cheaper.
Noise Considerations
The 7,200 RPM models (8TB and above) are noticeably louder during seeks than the WD Red Plus at equivalent capacities. If your NAS sits in a living space, this is worth factoring in. In a closet or server rack, IronWolf drives often win on price per terabyte against the Red Plus.
Best for: 1-8 bay home NAS builds running TrueNAS, Unraid, or Synology where cost per terabyte matters more than acoustic comfort.
Avoid if: Your NAS sits where you can hear it, or you need the higher workload rating and longer warranty of the IronWolf Pro.
