The WD Red SA500 is a NAS-optimized 2.5" SATA SSD designed for caching, tiered storage, and always-on operation. It uses 3D TLC NAND with a Marvell 88SS1074 controller and dedicated DRAM cache, delivering 560/530 MB/s sequential read/write. Available in both 2.5" and M.2 2280 form factors.

Built for NAS

The SA500 is positioned specifically for NAS environments: ZFS L2ARC/SLOG caching, Synology SSD caching, and QNAP tiered storage. The Marvell controller and DRAM cache provide the consistent random I/O performance that caching workloads demand, where DRAMless drives would bottleneck. The drive is rated for 24/7 operation with a workload rate of roughly 0.32-0.38 DWPD depending on capacity.

Endurance

Endurance figures are strong and purpose-built for write-heavy NAS use: 350 TBW (500GB), 600 TBW (1TB), 1,300 TBW (2TB), and 2,500 TBW (4TB). These are among the highest in the consumer SATA category, rivaling the Samsung 870 EVO. Five-year limited warranty.

M.2 Option

The M.2 2280 variant is available up to 2TB and fits NAS appliances with M.2 SATA cache slots (common on Synology and QNAP units). Same controller, same endurance, smaller footprint.

Best for: NAS SSD caching (L2ARC, SLOG, Synology/QNAP cache pools), home server boot drives, and any always-on system that needs SATA SSD reliability with high endurance.

Avoid if: You're building a desktop or laptop. The Samsung 870 EVO offers similar performance and endurance without the NAS-specific premium. If your NAS supports NVMe caching, an NVMe drive will outperform any SATA cache drive.
