WD Elements - External Desktop HDD USB 3.0 - 10TB

The WD Elements Desktop is WD's budget external drive line, available from 4TB to 24TB over USB 3.0. It's the most widely available WD desktop external — sold through Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, and most major retailers. No backup software or encryption is included; it's a bare-bones USB storage device.

What's Inside

Like the EasyStore, Elements Desktop enclosures contain full-size 3.5" WD drives behind a standard USB-SATA bridge with no hardware encryption. The internal drive is directly readable via SATA. Higher capacities (12TB+) typically contain helium-sealed CMR drives.

The 3.3V SATA Pin

WD drives manufactured since roughly 2017 use SATA pin 3 for a POWER_DISABLE signal per the SATA 3.3 specification. Older NAS enclosures and server backplanes that supply 3.3V on this pin will prevent the drive from spinning up. Common workarounds include covering pin 3 with Kapton tape or using a Molex-to-SATA power adapter that omits the 3.3V rail. Most NAS hardware manufactured after 2019 handles this correctly.

Elements vs. EasyStore vs. My Book

The Elements and EasyStore are functionally identical. The EasyStore is a Best Buy exclusive that starts at 8TB; the Elements starts at 4TB and is available everywhere. The WD My Book adds hardware encryption and a 3-year warranty (versus the Elements' 2-year), but the encryption means data on the bare drive is unreadable if separated from its bridge board.

Best for: Budget USB desktop backup, or the widest retail availability when shopping for WD external drives.

Avoid if: You need hardware encryption (choose the My Book) or capacities above 24TB (the EasyStore and My Book go higher).
