WD Blue SN580 - M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD - 500GB

The WD Blue SN580 is Western Digital's budget Gen4 NVMe drive, positioned below the Black SN770 in WD's lineup. It uses WD's in-house controller with Kioxia 112-layer BiCS5 TLC NAND and Host Memory Buffer (no dedicated DRAM). Sequential speeds reach up to 4,150 MB/s reads and 4,150 MB/s writes on the 1TB and 2TB. Available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB.

Budget Blue

The SN580's 4,150 MB/s reads are modest by Gen4 standards. It sits in the same performance tier as the TeamGroup MP44L: functional Gen4 speeds without pushing the interface limits. WD's Blue line has always been the reliability-focused, value-oriented tier, and the SN580 continues that positioning. Reads and writes are symmetric at 4,150 MB/s on the larger capacities, which is unusual. Most drives read faster than they write.

Power Efficiency

WD designed the SN580 with laptop use in mind. Power consumption is lower than the SN770, making it suitable for ultrabooks where battery life matters more than peak throughput.

Endurance

Best for: Budget laptop builds where power efficiency matters. A step up from SATA for systems that need NVMe speeds without the Black SN770's pricing. General-purpose secondary storage.

Avoid if: You can afford the SN770. The jump from 4,150 to 5,150 MB/s reads is meaningful, and the SN770's random I/O performance is noticeably stronger. The SN580's endurance at 150 TBW (250GB) is also on the low side.
