Seagate Exos 10E2400 - 2.5" Enterprise HDD - 1.2TB SAS SED 128MB

The Exos 10E2400 is Seagate's 2.5" enterprise SAS hard drive, available from 300GB to 2.4TB. It is a 10,000 RPM performance drive designed for transactional workloads in servers and storage arrays where IOPS matter more than raw capacity.

Performance-Class Specs

10,000 RPM with a 12Gb/s SAS interface (no SATA option). Cache is 256MB on the FastFormat models (600GB-2.4TB) and 128MB on the older 512 Native models. Average latency is 2.9ms, roughly 30% lower than a 7,200 RPM drive's 4.16ms. Sustained transfer rates reach 266 MB/s.

The 5-year warranty and 0.44% annualized failure rate position it as enterprise-grade, though the AFR is slightly higher than the 0.35% of the 7,200 RPM Exos 7E10 and Exos M lines.

A Niche Product for Homelabs

The 2.5" 10K RPM SAS drive is a datacenter legacy form factor. In enterprise environments, these are being replaced by SSDs for IOPS-heavy workloads and by high-capacity 3.5" drives for everything else. For homelabbers, the Exos 10E2400 has limited appeal: the max capacity of 2.4TB is small by modern standards, the SAS-only interface requires an HBA, and the 10K RPM spindle generates more noise and heat per terabyte than a 3.5" NAS drive.

Where these drives do find a home is in used enterprise servers (Dell R720, R730, HP DL380) that have 2.5" drive bays and SAS backplanes. If you already own the server, filling it with used 10E2400 drives from eBay is cheaper than buying a new NAS chassis.

Best for: Populating existing 2.5" SAS server chassis with affordable used enterprise drives for transactional workloads or VM storage.

Avoid if: You are building a new storage system. 3.5" NAS or enterprise drives offer 5-10x the capacity per slot at lower cost per terabyte.
