Toshiba MG11 - 3.5" Enterprise HDD - 18TB SATA

The MG11 is Toshiba's highest-capacity enterprise hard drive, available from 14TB to 24TB. It uses FC-MAMR (Flux Control Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording) on a 10-disk helium-sealed platform with 2.4TB per platter to reach 24TB in a standard 3.5" form factor.

Enterprise Specs

7,200 RPM, 512MB cache, CMR recording, available in SATA 6Gb/s and SAS 12Gb/s. Workload rating is 550TB/year with a 2.5 million hour MTTF and 5-year warranty. Helium-sealed. SIE and SED options available across the range.

Current Generation

The MG11 is Toshiba's current flagship enterprise capacity drive, competing directly with the WD Ultrastar HC580 (22-24TB) and Seagate Exos X24 at the high end. All three offer the same tier of reliability specs: 2.5M hour MTTF, 550TB/year workload, 5-year warranty, helium-sealed CMR.

The MG11's wider capacity range (14-24TB) gives more flexibility than the HC580 (22-24TB only). If you need 16TB or 18TB on a current-generation platform, the MG11 covers those capacities where the HC580 does not.

Homelab Relevance

As Toshiba's newest enterprise line, the MG11 commands retail pricing and is not yet widely available as datacenter pulls. For budget builds, the MG09 (18TB) or MG10 (20TB) offer better value on the used market. For new purchases where maximum density matters, the 24TB MG11 competes on price with the WD HC580 and Seagate Exos X24.

Best for: High-density storage builds where 14-24TB per slot on a current-gen platform justifies retail pricing, or future used-market purchases as datacenter deployments age out.

Avoid if: You are building on a budget. Used MG09 or MG10 drives offer better value per terabyte today.
