WD My Book - External Desktop HDD USB 3.0 - 14TB
About WD My Book - External Desktop HDD
The WD My Book is WD's feature-rich desktop external drive, available from 4TB to 26TB over USB 3.0. It includes WD Backup software, a 3-year warranty, and AES 256-bit hardware encryption.
What's Inside
My Book enclosures contain the same 3.5" WD drives found in the EasyStore and Elements Desktop — typically White Label versions of WD Red or Ultrastar models. Higher capacities (12TB+) typically contain helium-sealed CMR drives. The internal drive is a standard SATA drive that can be removed and used in any NAS or PC.
Two things to know when using the bare drive. First, WD drives manufactured since roughly 2017 use SATA pin 3 for a POWER_DISABLE signal that can prevent the drive from spinning up in older hardware. Covering pin 3 with Kapton tape or using a Molex-to-SATA power adapter solves this; most NAS hardware manufactured after 2019 handles it correctly out of the box. Second, the drive must be formatted after removal — the My Book's hardware encryption means data written through the USB interface is unreadable via direct SATA. Once formatted, the encryption is irrelevant and the drive behaves like any other internal hard disk.
Hardware Encryption
The My Book includes AES 256-bit encryption that may live on the USB bridge chip, the drive's own controller, or both — WD changes internal components across production runs. For drives used as-is over USB, the encryption is transparent and adds a layer of data protection. If you set a password via WD Security software, the drive is locked and data becomes inaccessible outside the original enclosure. If you never set a password, the drive remains unlocked by default.
My Book vs. EasyStore and Elements
All three contain the same internal drives. The My Book's 3-year warranty is the longest (the EasyStore and Elements carry 2-year). The EasyStore and Elements use plain USB-SATA bridges with no encryption, so the internal drive is directly readable via SATA without formatting. The My Book requires a format after removal but is otherwise identical. If the drive stays in its enclosure, the My Book is the better product — longer warranty, encryption, and backup software included.
Best for: USB desktop backup where hardware encryption and a longer warranty matter, or a source of high-capacity WD drives for NAS and server builds.
Avoid if: You want the simplest possible path to direct SATA use. The EasyStore and Elements skip the format step entirely.
