Kingston Q500 - 2.5" SATA SSD - 240GB

The Kingston Q500 is a budget 2.5" SATA SSD that competes directly with the Crucial BX500. It uses 3D TLC NAND with a DRAMless Phison controller, delivering 500/450 MB/s sequential read/write. Slightly below the SATA ceiling but fast enough for the HDD replacement use case it targets.

DRAMless Budget Drive

Like the BX500, the Q500 skips the DRAM cache to keep the price low. The Phison S11 controller handles mapping via Host Memory Buffer. For boot drives and general desktop storage, this is perfectly adequate. Sustained random write performance won't match DRAM-equipped drives, but that's the tradeoff for the price tier.

Capacity and Endurance

Available in 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB. No 1TB or larger options. Endurance is modest: 80 TBW (240GB), 160 TBW (480GB), 300 TBW (960GB). Three-year limited warranty. Kingston quotes a 2-million-hour MTBF.

Limitations

The 960GB cap is the biggest constraint. If you need 1TB or more, you'll need to look elsewhere. The slightly lower sequential speeds (500/450 vs 540/500) won't matter in practice, but the shorter product lineup and lower endurance figures give the BX500 a slight edge in the budget tier.

Best for: The cheapest possible HDD-to-SSD upgrade on older systems where 960GB is enough capacity.

Avoid if: You need more than 960GB, or if the Crucial BX500 is similarly priced. The BX500 has higher sequential speeds, more capacity options up to 4TB, and slightly better endurance.
