The Seagate Expansion Desktop is Seagate's budget USB external drive, available from 4TB to 28TB — the highest maximum capacity of any consumer desktop external. It connects via USB 3.0 and works as plug-and-play storage with no software or encryption.

What's Inside

Expansion Desktop enclosures contain full-size 3.5" Seagate drives, typically BarraCuda models in the lower capacities and IronWolf or Exos-adjacent drives at higher capacities. The exact internal model varies by capacity and production run. The USB-SATA bridge has no hardware encryption, so the bare drive is directly readable via SATA.

Unlike WD externals, Seagate drives do not have the 3.3V SATA pin issue. They work in any standard SATA backplane or NAS enclosure without modification.

Expansion vs. WD Externals

The Expansion Desktop's 1-year warranty is the shortest in this category — the WD Elements and EasyStore carry 2-year, and the My Book carries 3-year. On the other hand, the Expansion reaches 28TB, exceeding all three WD options. Seagate drives also avoid the 3.3V pin workaround that WD drives require on older hardware.

The internal drives are Seagate models rather than WD. Homelabbers who prefer WD internals (Red, Ultrastar) will gravitate toward the WD externals, while those who prefer Seagate internals (BarraCuda, IronWolf) or want the simplest plug-and-play SATA experience will prefer the Expansion.
