Seagate SkyHawk - 3.5" Surveillance HDD - 6TB SATA

The SkyHawk is Seagate's entry-level surveillance drive, available from 1TB to 8TB. It targets small to mid-size camera installations that need reliable 24/7 recording without the enterprise specs and price of the SkyHawk AI.

Built for Continuous Writes

Surveillance workloads are unusual: the drive writes constantly from multiple camera streams but reads infrequently (only during playback review). SkyHawk firmware is tuned for this pattern. Seagate's ImagePerfect technology prioritizes write throughput to reduce dropped frames, and the drives support up to 64 HD camera streams.

All models in the current lineup use CMR recording at 7,200 RPM with 256MB cache.

Specs and Limitations

The SkyHawk carries a 180TB/year workload rating, 1 million hour MTBF, and a 3-year warranty with 3 years of Rescue Data Recovery Services included. These are respectable for a consumer-tier surveillance drive but well below the SkyHawk AI (550TB/year, up to 2.5M hours, 5-year warranty). For installations with more than about 16 cameras or any AI analytics, the AI model is the better investment.

Rotational vibration sensors are included on the 4TB and above models (ST4000VX016, ST6000VX009, ST8000VX010), supporting multi-drive NVR enclosures of up to 16 bays. The 1-3TB models support up to 8 bays and lack RV sensors.

SkyHawk vs. IronWolf

Both target 24/7 operation with the same workload rating (180TB/yr), MTBF (1M hours), and warranty (3 years). The IronWolf is tuned for balanced read/write NAS workloads; the SkyHawk is tuned for write-heavy surveillance. For a dedicated NVR appliance, the SkyHawk's firmware is the better fit. For anything that also serves files, the IronWolf is more appropriate.

Best for: Small surveillance installations (up to 16-32 cameras) running a dedicated NVR with no AI analytics requirements.

Avoid if: You need AI video analytics (buy the SkyHawk AI), or you want a general-purpose NAS drive (buy the IronWolf).
