Samsung 9100 PRO - M.2 PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD - 4TB

The Samsung 9100 PRO is Samsung's Gen5 flagship, replacing the 990 PRO and pushing into territory that previous consumer drives couldn't reach. The headline number is 14,500 MB/s sequential read, nearly double what Gen4 drives achieve, but the more interesting story is the 8TB capacity option, the first on a consumer NVMe drive.

Performance

Samsung's proprietary Pascal controller drives sequential reads to 14,500 MB/s and writes to 13,000 MB/s. These figures require a Gen5 x4 slot to materialize; in a Gen4 system the drive will negotiate down and perform accordingly. DRAM cache is included, and Samsung's V-NAND has a long track record of consistent random I/O across the product's life.

Capacities and Endurance

The lineup runs 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB. The 8TB variant is genuinely notable: no other consumer NVMe drive has shipped at that density. The 8TB carries 4800 TBW, and all capacities include a 5-year warranty.

Thermals and Platform Requirements

Gen5 drives run hot. Without active cooling or a substantial heatsink, sustained workloads will push temperatures high enough to trigger throttling. A motherboard with a good M.2 heatsink is essentially required, not optional. The drive also requires a platform with PCIe Gen5 lanes available for the M.2 slot.

Limitations

Gen5 drives carry a price premium that sequential speed alone rarely justifies for most workloads. Real-world application load times and gaming performance show diminishing returns versus a good Gen4 drive. The 9100 PRO makes sense when capacity is the deciding factor, the 8TB option is unique, or when you're running sustained large-file workloads that actually saturate Gen4 bandwidth.

Best for: Users on Gen5-capable platforms who want maximum sequential throughput, or anyone who needs 8TB of NVMe storage in a single M.2 slot.

Avoid if: You're on a Gen4 platform, your workload is primarily random I/O or gaming, or you're not prepared to manage thermals carefully.
