WD Blue SN5000 - M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD - 4TB

The WD Blue SN5000 replaces the SN580 as WD's mainstream NVMe drive, using the SanDisk Polaris 3 controller in a single-sided M.2 2280 design. Sequential reads reach 5,500 MB/s on the 4TB model and 5,150 MB/s on the 1-2TB models. Available from 500GB to 4TB.

NAND Configuration

The 500GB through 2TB models use Kioxia 112-layer BiCS5 TLC NAND. The 4TB model switches to 162-layer BiCS6 QLC NAND to hit the higher capacity in a single-sided package. This means the 4TB has different write endurance and sustained write characteristics than the smaller capacities.

DRAM-less Design

Like most current WD consumer drives, the SN5000 uses HMB instead of onboard DRAM. The nCache 4.0 SLC caching layer handles write bursts. For typical consumer workloads (OS boot, application loading, gaming), the DRAM-less design performs comparably to DRAM-cached alternatives.

SN5000 vs. SN580

The SN5000 brings a 4TB option the SN580 lacked, higher sequential speeds (5,500 vs 4,000 MB/s on 4TB), and improved random IOPS. The single-sided design also improves compatibility with thin laptops.

Endurance

TBW scales with capacity: 300 (500GB), 600 (1TB), 900 (2TB), 1,200 (4TB). Note the 4TB's QLC NAND carries the same 1,200 TBW as the 2TB's TLC despite double the capacity. All models carry a 5-year warranty and 1.75 million hour MTTF.

Best for: General-purpose builds, laptops, and budget-conscious users who want NVMe speeds without paying for gaming-tier performance.

Avoid if: You need sustained write performance on the 4TB (the QLC NAND will slow down after the SLC cache fills).
