WD Purple - 3.5" Surveillance HDD - 1TB SATA

The WD Purple is Western Digital's entry-level surveillance drive, available from 1TB to 8TB. It is designed for small to mid-size camera systems that record continuously but do not run AI video analytics.

Write-Optimized Firmware

Surveillance drives spend the vast majority of their time writing sequential streams from cameras. WD's AllFrame technology is tuned for this pattern, reducing dropped frames during multi-stream recording. The Purple supports up to 64 HD camera streams.

All models use CMR recording with 256MB cache. The 1-6TB models spin at 5,400 RPM; the 8TB runs at 5,640 RPM. The lower RPM compared to the Purple Pro (7,200 RPM) means less heat and noise, which suits the small NVR enclosures these drives typically live in.

Reliability

The WD Purple carries a 180TB/year workload rating, 1.5 million hour MTBF, and a 3-year warranty. These are solid specs for a consumer surveillance drive, positioned between the desktop-class WD Blue (no workload rating, 2-year warranty) and the enterprise Purple Pro (550TB/yr, 2.5M hours, 5-year warranty).

For installations beyond about 32 cameras or any setup running video analytics, the Purple Pro adds the higher workload rating, RV sensors, and AllFrame AI support for analytics workloads.

Can You Use It in a NAS?

The Purple and the WD Red Plus share similar hardware at overlapping capacities, and both use CMR. The difference is firmware tuning. The Purple's AllFrame firmware prioritizes sustained sequential writes from camera streams. The Red Plus's NASware firmware is tuned for the balanced read/write patterns of a file server handling Plex streams, backups, and general file access. In a dedicated NVR that only records and plays back footage, the Purple is the better match. For anything that also serves files, the Red Plus is the right choice.

Best for: Small surveillance systems (up to 32 cameras) with a dedicated NVR appliance and no AI analytics.

Avoid if: You need AI video analytics or a high-bay installation (buy the Purple Pro), or you want a general-purpose NAS drive (buy the WD Red Plus).
