Kingston A400 - 2.5" SATA SSD - 240GB

The Kingston A400 is an entry-level 2.5" SATA SSD built for one purpose: replacing a spinning hard drive in an older laptop or desktop. It does that job reliably and cheaply. Nothing about it is exciting, and it isn't meant to be.

What It Is

SATA III interface, 2.5" 7mm form factor, 500/450 MB/s sequential read/write. These numbers are at the ceiling of what SATA allows. The A400 uses a Phison S11 controller without DRAM, which is common across budget SATA drives and fits the use case well enough. SATA SSDs don't push the kind of random I/O that exposes DRAMless weaknesses at high queue depths.

The Upgrade Case

For a laptop or desktop currently running a mechanical hard drive, a SATA SSD upgrade is one of the most impactful hardware changes possible. Boot times, application launches, and file access all improve dramatically. The A400 delivers that improvement without requiring a newer platform, an M.2 slot, or any platform compatibility research.

Capacities and Endurance

Available from 120GB to 960GB. Endurance figures are modest at 160 TBW on the 480GB variant, which reflects the budget positioning. Kingston quotes 1 million hours MTBF. Three-year warranty, shorter than most NVMe drives.

Limitations

Three-year warranty is the shortest in this category, and the endurance ratings are conservative. This is not a drive for write-intensive workloads. If your system has an M.2 slot available, a budget NVMe drive will outperform it at similar prices. The A400's value is entirely tied to the SATA-only constraint.

Best for: Older laptops and desktops with only a 2.5" SATA bay, HDD-to-SSD upgrades where M.2 is unavailable.

Avoid if: Your system has an M.2 slot, even a Gen3 NVMe drive will outperform it, or if you need more than 1TB of storage in a single drive.
