Toshiba MG08 - 3.5" Enterprise HDD - 16TB SATA

The MG08 is Toshiba's 9-disk helium-sealed enterprise hard drive, available in capacities up to 16TB. It was Toshiba's first generation to use MAMR (Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording) and the first to reach 16TB in the MG lineup.

Enterprise Specs

7,200 RPM, 512MB cache, CMR recording, available in SATA 6Gb/s and SAS 12Gb/s. Workload rating is 550TB/year with a 2.5 million hour MTTF and 5-year warranty. Helium-sealed.

Homelab Relevance

The MG08 is Toshiba's equivalent of the WD Ultrastar HC550 or Seagate Exos X16 generation. These are plentiful on the used enterprise market and offer competitive pricing per terabyte against used WD Ultrastars. Toshiba enterprise drives have a strong reliability track record in Backblaze's published drive stats, which gives homelabbers confidence when buying used units with high power-on hours.

The same used-market advice applies as with any datacenter pull: check SMART data for reallocated sectors, power-on hours, and helium pressure. SAS models require a SAS HBA.

Best for: Budget NAS and storage server builds using used enterprise drives where Toshiba pricing undercuts comparable WD or Seagate units.

Avoid if: You need more than 16TB per slot. The MG10 and MG11 offer higher capacities on newer platforms.
