WD Ultrastar DC HC530 - 3.5" Enterprise HDD - 14TB SATA SE
WD Ultrastar DC HC530 - 3.5" Enterprise HDD Variants
About WD Ultrastar DC HC530 - 3.5" Enterprise HDD
The Ultrastar DC HC530 is a 14TB enterprise hard drive and WD's 5th-generation HelioSeal platform. It introduced TDMR (Two-Dimensional Magnetic Recording) to the Ultrastar line, using multiple readers per head to improve signal-to-noise ratio at higher track densities.
Enterprise Specs
7,200 RPM, 512MB cache, CMR recording with TDMR, available in SATA 6Gb/s and SAS 12Gb/s. Workload rating is 550TB/year with a 2.5 million hour MTBF and 5-year warranty. Helium-sealed. Available in both 4Kn and 512e sector formats.
The HC530 doubled the cache from 256MB (HC520) to 512MB and switched to WUH-prefix model numbers (e.g., WUH721414ALE6L4 for SATA 512e).
Homelab Relevance
At 14TB, the HC530 offers a modest density bump over the 12TB HC520. Both are commonly available as datacenter pulls. The price difference between used 12TB and 14TB drives is often small enough that the HC530 is the better value per terabyte when available at similar pricing.
The same used-market advice applies: check SMART data, verify helium pressure, and prefer drives with lower power-on hours when you have a choice.
Drive Security Variants
The last character of the model number indicates the security mode:
- ISE (Instant Secure Erase) -- Crypto-erases all data in seconds for fast drive retirement or redeployment. Available on both SATA and SAS.
- SE (Base) -- No encryption, sanitize overwrite only. Available on both SATA and SAS. SATA models include ATA Security Feature Set as standard.
- SED (Self-Encrypting Drive) -- Hardware AES-256 encryption with TCG Enterprise protocol. Available on both SATA and SAS.
- SED-FIPS -- SED with FIPS certification for government and regulated environments. SAS models only.
For homelab use, ISE or SE variants are the most common and least expensive. SED adds no performance penalty but carries a price premium.
Best for: NAS builds where 14TB per slot fits the capacity plan and used pricing is competitive with the HC520.
Avoid if: You can find HC550 drives (14-18TB) at similar pricing. The HC550 is a newer platform with EAMR technology and better power efficiency.
